Baseball
: An Illustrated History
| Actual Reader
Review: - history of baseball
An evocative book that touches the true soul
of the game.
Anyone who ever played or watched the game cannot
fail to be moved by the rich tapestry of baseball legend that comes to
live in the text and especially the illustrations of this book. The essay
by Doris Kearn reminiscing about the Brooklyn Dodgers, and tying that into
the love for her family is haunting and very beautiful, while Thomas Boswell's
reflections on his mother's love for the Washington Senators is moving
as well as dryly hilarious. In its essence each player discussed in detail
comes to life in poignant detail. A must for anyone who cares deeply for
the game.

history of
baseball
A magnificent, exhaustively researched chronicle
in words and pictures of our nation's pastime, and how it came to be what
it is. In their analysis and celebration of baseball's evolution over 150
years from a game played on vacant city lots in front of a few lookers-on
to present-day contests in domed stadia with television audiences approaching
one billion, Ward and Burns (The Civil War, 1990) divide the sport's history
into nine sections (or innings), each with accompanying essays by such
notable writers as Gerald Early, Doris Kearns Goodwin, and George Will.
Perhaps most noteworthy is this volume's ability to examine the game while
remaining blessedly free from the overanalysis and intellectualization
that are common to such comprehensive studies. To wit: Babe Ruth is seen
not so much as a lens through which a historical era can be studied, but
as a great player whose accomplishments helped alter millions of fans'
connection ...Read

Baseball's
Book of Firsts
by Lloyd Johnson
Lloyd Johnson descends into the dusty catacombs
of baseball's archives and emerges with a multitude of first-time happenings--some
obvious, some not, and some simply surprising. Running from the sacred
to the arcane, they range from categories like the
first relief pitcher, the first
pitcher caught doctoring a ball, the first
third baseman to charge bunts, the first championship
team to be broken up, the first player to hold out for more money, the
first manager to endorse nutrient drinks (and no, it wasn't Tommy Lasorda;
he's late by more than a century), the first road trip, the first ballpark
to burn down, the first uniform numbers, the first box score, the first
player stalked by a fan, the first ... well, you get the gist.
Each inaugural moment is assigned its own page
with appropriate illustrations; even better, each is linked to the long
chain of the games evolution. Which is how the irrepressible Lasorda gets
his due...Read
